Emerging Issues on Environmental Education (EE) and ESD
On December 20, 2002, the UN General Assembly adopted, by consensus, a resolution establishing a United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD). The resolution designates this ten-year period as 2005-2014, and proclaims UNESCO as the lead agency to promote the Decade. The overall goal of the Decade is to integrate the values inherent in sustainable development into all aspects of learning to encourage changes in behaviour that allow for a more sustainable and just society for all. Society, Environment and Economy are considered as the three key areas of Sustainable Development with culture as an underlying dimension. Education for Sustainable Development involves several components in addition to EE such as Gender Equality, Human Rights, Peace and Human Security, Cultural Diversity, Health etc.The Website www.desd.org is a forum to promote Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) by engaging a large number of stakeholders. It is a platform to capture the various processes and learnings for the Decade and to discuss Sustainable Development issues. This interactive website offers a wide range of information and resources on DESD.
